The chair's range of services includes laboratory tests and material investigations at a high professional level. Additionally we perform structural inspections and related material testing.

Construction materials testing

Mechanical tests:

      On hardened concretes and mortars

  • Tensile strength
  • Flexural strength  
  • Compressive strength
  • Splitting tensile strength
  • Individually tailored test methods 
  • Water penetration test

      On cements

  • Determination of setting times
  • Determination of spatial stability
  • Determination of water demand for the standard consistency
  • Compressive strength of cement mortar prisms
  • Flexural strength of cement mortar prisms (three-point load test)

Chemical and analytical tests:

  • Simulation of acid and sulfate attacks on concretes and mortars
  • Mercury intrusion porosimetry
  • Determination of the pure density of cement and mineral-bonded materials
  • Photometric determination of elements in the eluate of concretes and mortars
  • Chloride penetration depth and content

Microscopic examinations:

  • Determination of micropore and air void characteristics in hardened concrete
  • Investigation of concrete degradation at the microlevel
  • Determination of acid penetration depth
  • Laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIPS) for elemental analysis of materials
  • Determination of carbonation depth in hardened concrete

Durability tests:

  • Testing for alkali sensitivity - ASR (alkali-silica reaction)
  • Testing for freeze-thaw resistance (CDF/CIF)
  • Determination of carbonation resistance
  • Wear resistance according to Böhme
  • Determination of chloride penetration resistance by means of rapid chloride migration tests
  • Investigation of thermal stresses and simulation of climatic exposures
